In addition to the animal chores I already wrote about, we were able to help in the gardens and field. We planted a lot of peppers one day. Little Plate thought it was such a neat chore. She loved the part where we tipped the plant out of their temporary sprouting container because I told her to pat the baby plants little bum. And she did and giggled every time. It’s the small things, right? She tucked them in real tight and it was a good toddler day in the garden! Another day we made a little outdoor kitchen out of an old iron stove and some bowls of water and she played well for hours while I worked.
We had some days of weeding of course, but even that was pretty satisfying. We helped transplant little baby lettuce starts, worked on a vertical hugelkultur style planter, chased cows, fed and watered various animals, moved a giant wood pile, got ready for the Saturday Feet on Farm events, helped with the cooking, and our biggest contribution might have been the egg mobile that Mr. Plate built and I painted (future post on that project).
The scenery made everyday feel special. We loved all of the chores and the bit of help we were able to give at Headwaters!
